32 Colored Woodcuts after Henry LeMarié, 1996

Item — Box: CFC Art Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0207.1-2
Abstract I have found LeMarié's miniatures delightful since I first saw them. This set is gorgeously presented. They seem to reproduce the illustrations in LeMarié's edition of 1996, over which I have expressed my delight. I wanted to include LeMarié's "Cobbler and Banker" in the Joslyn exhibit, but the art is too small. As I learn more now, I wonder how this kind of colorful work can be done on woodblocks. How many passes does it take on the poor piece of paper? I see this set of prints as an...

A. Gonin GA, Four cards, 1904

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0133.1-4
Abstract

#6 is a remarkable card! I take it that her mode of dress marks the musical girl as a gypsy, while the mother wears a cross around her neck. The photographer caught one of the children at a great moment of crying! Otherwise, if there ever were posed scenes, here they are! Postmarked and dated in handwriting 1905 and 1904, respectively. The Cocq cards are all in very good condition. I am wondering if there are two cards filling in the text between our 3rd card here and the last.

A Set of 7 Original Watercolor Paintings, 1965

Item — Carton: CFC Artifact Box 15
Identifier: CFC2021.0526.1-7
Abstract 1965? 7 original watercolor paintings of Aesop’s fables by LouLette Sablon (1897-1970), framed and signed. Each 11" x 13".It was hard for me to believe that the whole lot of originals was selling for this low price. I find these watercolors lovely! LouLette Sablon was born on July 16, 1897 in France. She was an actress, known for To Catch a Thief (1955), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). She died on October 21, 1970 in Los Angeles...

Abeille-Cartes, 1996

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0310.1-2
Abstract The verso of these two postcards presents a number (2244/1 and 2244/2, respectively), a title, and a boxed version of La Fontaine's fable text at the upper left. The lively images on the picture side of the card are heavy on pastels, flowers, dressed animals, and block-letter titles. In FC the rapidly falling cheese leaves a visible trail; a mouse in an open portion of the tree trunk holds his ears against the crow's bad music, while the fox laughs below. In TMCM, the country mouse offers a...

Aesop's Fables Scarf, 2000

Item — Box: CFC Textile Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0598.1
Abstract

2000? French silk scarf about 33½” square depicting Aesop’s fables with English language quotations around each of nine images.

It is surprising to find a French scarf representing Aesop, since La Fontaine is so widely known and loved in France. This sheer scarf surprises also by its size. It has fun with the stories and their images! Click on any portion to see it enlarged.

Agenda Advertising the Grand Bazaar de Lyon, 1918

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0058.1
Abstract

GA; DW; MM; Heron; WL; and FC. The illustrations are exactly the same as some of those appearing on individual stock trade cards I have representing Au Camelia and also Chicoree Anlatte. For each three-month poriton and then fore the whole year there is space to write down the agenda for that time. The claim for the Grand Bazaar is "Ici on trouve de tout."

Alcide Picard, 1930

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0024.1-9
Abstract Several of these designs appear on papers and cards listed under "Leopold Verger-Chicoree Haquet" and, among chocolate and chicoree cards, "Maison Salmon." And two listed there actually are identical cards with this set. Bertrand describes them as "Babotte," but I can see indications only of Picard. It is true that our collection includes several cards from "Alph. Babotte," and the images are those of this group. One of my favorite Paris used bookshops is Librairie Picard. I wonder if...

Alphonse Robert, Women and a Secret Postcard, 1880

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0059
Abstract Here is a curious card. I can find no others in the series. Alphonse Robert died in 1880. That is why I choose the last year of his life to date this card. The stance and expression of the man here beg, I believe, for interpretation. I have seen only seldom this approach to quoting a text: leaving out whole sections, perhaps to accommodate a long fable to a limited space. This is exceptional color work! Might it make the card much later? This seems to be a thoroughly modern card, in...

Amorous LaF Fables

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0311.1-4
Abstract

Here is a delightful set of cards. They use fables to offer an initial description of romantic moments, apparently always between soldiers-in-uniform and beautifully dressed young women. Then there is a little poem to advise the participants in the fable's scene. If I read these poems correctly, they at least sometimes urge maidens to gather rosebuds while they may.

Animals in the Plague Medallion, 1980

Item — Box: CFC Artifact Box 5
Identifier: CFC2021.0272.1
Abstract

1980? Two 2 1/2" medallions by Charles Virion of La Fontaine fables. "The Cat, the Weasel and the Hare" and "The Animals in the Plague." The latter for $60 from herefordius through Ebay, August, '20.

These medallions are very similar in format to the large series done by Jean Vernon. One notices the different artist immediately. These two are the only members of the series that I have found online.

Anonymous Ten-Card Photographic Series La Cigale et la Fourmi, 1900

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0066.1-10
Abstract Various series of photographic postcard presentations of GA have flirted with the presentation of the grasshopper as a human pinup girl. This series may go furthest in the direction of conflating a set of fable cards with notorious French picture postcards of nude women. This series, rare and larger than the usual series of five or six cards, has an unusual feature of using a one-noun description of each of the phases of the story. Wanting to give a sense of the cards we have without...

Ant and Grasshopper Rover Ratisbonne, 1905

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0130.1-5
Abstract

The narrative here deviates from La Fontaine, just as the title is reversed. Here the ant provides all that the grasshopper needs, but admonishes her to start working. I have not been able to find the sense of "Vous avez faites maigre chère."

Articles Presenting La Fontaine's Works, 1886

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0072.1
Abstract

"Les Deux Pigeons" is a touching story of two friends. One feels the need to travel but experiences nothing but trouble along the way. The other waits patiently at home. They are reunited. Apparently this fable inspired and provided lyrics for this opera, highly praised by the journal as it presents key characters and scenes.

A&S 541 Perrette et le Pot au Lait, Set of 5, 1910

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0060.1-5
Abstract This is an unusual set in that it takes its own tangent off of La Fontaine's famous fable. As I understand the text, Perrette – first named in the fourth of five cards -- a "fermière, séduisante et coquette," is on her way to market with a large pot of milk on her head. On the way she dreams of a "corsage" that will be paid for by the milk she will sell. Alas, a false step destroys her charming projects! Perrette is weeping when a young, good looking man comes up and consoles her. As...

Astrologer Who Fell into a Well, 1983

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0006.2
Abstract Several things make this card unusual for me. First, it falls outside the series of Mauzan cards I had already gathered. Secondly, it dates this card – and so helps with the others – in 1944. Thirdly, trying to find out more led me to learn his first names and so to correct what seemed to be an "X" in his signature on cards. Finally, I am cataloguing this card in December of 2020 and presumed that I had received it recently. I was astounded to look at the envelope and see a postmark of 2012!...

Bébé Fabulist, 1910

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0312.1-5
Abstract I would guess that there is an experiment in the use of photography going on here. The experiment would seem to be this: can a good photographer show the course of a fable by the facial expressions of a clever young actress? The answer here has plenty of "yes," since the girl is both photogenic and expressive. The five pictures seem to me to follow well La Fontaine's fable's pattern: first distance on the part of the crow; then interest; then sheer joy over the flattery; then perhaps the...

B.B. Perrette's Water-Jug, 1906

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0029.1-6
Abstract This seems to be a story built off of La Fontaine's fable, since it features Perrette, a jug, and a male. Perrette fills her jug as Colin looks on. She fills her jug, but he loves her. He describes to her the happiness of lovers. He puts his arm around her. Her jug falls and breaks, and Colin is happy over his mischief. Seeing her cry, he leads her into his house. As Bertrand writes of the set, "largely inspired by La Fontaine." Are these good lessons to be teaching French kids in...

Bergougnan/Boutigny, Set of 10, 1890?

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Abstract Each of the colored pictures here includes a quadrangular text of the fable from La Fontaine or, in the one case noted above, Florian. It also includes five circles arranged in relation to a major illustration of the story. Bergougnan seems to have been a major seller of rubber products, especially for automobiles. The cards frequently advertise Caoutchouc. Thérèse Boutigny is advertised as "Marchande de Mode" in Amiens. The two Boutigny cards were printed byi PaulVallier, Clermont FD...

Besoin d'un plus petit, Lion and Mouse Postcard, 1955

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0038.1
Abstract

The middle-aged couple has gone out leaving grandpa, their child, and three dogs at home. The child has used his car to pull a pulley around the lamp to raise grandpa up so that he can get at the jar of sausages on top of a cabinet. I wish I could make out the rest of the artist's name after "Jean du." Nice use of color! I am surprised at the English translation of La Fontaine's moral.

Best Set of Liebig 1884 Gold, 1883

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0045.1-6
Abstract

This may be our best preserved set of Liebig's first fable set. Albert has them listed as from 1883. I think the usual date given is 1884. Now I am tempted to invest in an English language set available on Ebay. The collector's urge is hard to repress!
